Decision-making is one of the areas that the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s team is working on ahead of the HSBC Singapore 7s.
The tournament is from January 31- February 1, 2026.
Head coach Osea Kolinisau said that decision-making was the key issue for the Fiji Sevens team as they worked to improve discipline and defence.
“Mistakes in recent tournaments came from poor choices in the field,” he said.
“This is one are we are working on these past few weeks.”
This was one area they identified from the red card of Ilikimi Torosi during their Dubai 7s semi-final match against New Zealand for a late tackle.
The team wanted to be known for discipline and clean play.
“We want to be known as a team that plays clean, disciplined, 100 per cent,” he said.
Kolinisau linked discipline to winning championships.
“Teams that win titles and win championships are very disciplined. They give away less penalties,” he said.
He admitted that penalties in Cape Town hurt the team.
“In Cape Town, we gave away a lot of penalties. It’s something we’re working on and making sure our penalty counts are low.”
We want to be known as a team that plays clean, disciplined, 100 per cent.
Coach Osea Kolinisau
Kolinisau reminded his players that defence and decision-making were connected.
“Attack can win games, but defence will win championships,” he said.
The coach said the team had taken the mindset of improving one-on-one tackling and reducing errors.
“We just have to get better at tackling. Very good teams have very good defence. That’s something we were really working on,” he said.
Kolinisau concluded that discipline and decision-making would define the team’s future. “It’s something we’re addressing and we know how important discipline is,” he said.
