The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has set a clear target for the Flying Fijians in the upcoming Nations Championship — win at least two of their three matches.
FRU board chairman John Sanday said selection of a strong, winning team would be key.
“The biggest challenge is the selection of a winning Flying Fijians team,” the former Flying Fijians No.8 said.
“We aim to win two out of the three games in July, at a minimum. I cannot emphasise enough that winning drives everything. So that is our main focus. It must fit in with our performance excellence and brand performance pillars.”
Interim head coach Senirusi Seruvakula is expected to name the squad later this week.
The Flying Fijians will face Wales on July 4 in Cardiff, England on July 11, and Scotland on July 18 in Edinburgh.
Sanday said the union had made progress in managing international fixtures.
“We have learnt considerably since the end of last year and now know the lay of the land of this business of international rugby.
“It has been a period of growth in knowledge and confidence for Fiji Rugby in the business of hosting our home games in overseas markets.”
He said the current focus was on ticket sales and match-day organisation.
“With the exception of the Wales game, the other two games ticket sales are progressing well and tracking above projections.
“We have director Lailanie Burnes stationed in the UK and focusing on game day delivery. It will be a festival of Fiji cultures and colours off the field and Flying Fijians flair.”
Tribute
Sanday also paid tribute to former Flying Fijians and Nadi loose forward Ilami Lutumailagi, who passed away recently.
“It is a sad day for Fiji rugby. One of our colourful former players in both 7s and 15s has passed away,” he said.
“We acknowledge the life and contributions of the late Ilami Lutumailagi, who was a dashing looseman in his playing days for Nadi and also for Fiji.
“He also excelled at the Hong Kong 7s as a star noted by his long striding runs.”
Sanday recalled recently spending time with Lutumailagi.
“I was sitting with him at the funeral of Alifereti Dere at Vatutu Village, Nawaka, and we shared some yagona after the burial ceremony with other players. They were wonderful moments. I was shocked to be told of his passing yesterday and I reflected on those moments with pride and also with sadness. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family.”
He confirmed he would attend the funeral in Nadi on behalf of Fiji Rugby.
“Ilami's place in the history of Fiji rugby is secure and he will always be remembered. May he rest in peace,” he added.
