Fijiana rugby 7s head coach Saiasi Fuli has laid down his selection criteria for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Fuli said selection will be based on fitness, physicality and the ability to play smart rugby.
He also said players that show stability in the set piece are going to make the cut for Tokyo.
Fuli said the challenge now for the women is to play well and show what they are capable of during the Oceania competition on June 25-27.
“I reminded the players to play smart rugby and at the same time balance power and fitness, so we can match the likes of Australia and New Zealand,” he said.
“The three components is the base that will shape our selection going into the Oceania Sevens and the Olympic Games.
“Also, if they don’t have mental toughness then they lose out on selection.
“We have to create that balance across the squad that will be selected for the Olympic Games.
“So we want to select the best players who can maintain those three components.”
“I know it’s tough but we have to do it and we have to challenge our girls to remain consistent and improve in those areas.”
Co-captains
Meanwhile, veteran forward Rusila Nagasau and livewire halfback Tokasa Seniyasi will lead our Fijiana 7s team to the Oceania competition.
“Right now we have a pool of leaders and the rest are squad members and we have co-captains coming in this tournament,” he said.
“Tokasa has been leading us from the HSBC sevens series and Nagasau has been in that leadership role before.
“They will both be a vital part of the team and good leaders toward our campaign.”
