Fijiana rugby 7s head coach, Saiasi Fuli will look after the women’s and men’s training programmes as they prepare for next month’s Dubai 7s tournament.
The former Fijian 7s halfback acknowledged former coach Gareth Baber for his contribution in building up his coaching career.
“I was very emotional, he (Baber) gave me that opportunity in 2017 and 2018 to be his assistant,” Fuli said.
“It was all part of the learning process and building me as a coach, coming through the ranks in Fiji Rugby especially in sevens.
“And it’s sad to hear that he will move on to his next journey.”
Fuli said the men’s and women’s teams go to camp from today.
He will be assisted by Olympic Games double gold medallists, Jerry Tuwai.
“We’ve started training last week, so far so good. The Fijiana reps continue to train in different urban centres- Suva, Sigatoka and the combined Nadi, Lautoka area.”
Fuli has kept core of his squad from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for the exception of playmaker, Viniana Riwai, who will be leaving for Japan soon.
He also got a few new faces in the squad, including Adi Cakobau School sprinter, Naomi Navuga.
“So far we’ve been doing a lot of planning, and also the support from providing some guidance and advice on how we can positively, continue on with the programme.
“It’s maintaining the system that has been put in place and providing advice to the new management. We have a new management and also Jerry has the role of coach/player.”
The men’s team have lost a few key players that played at the Tokyo Olympics who have signed up for the Fijian Drua and other overseas clubs
These players are Kalione Nasoko, Meli Derenalagi, Napolioni Bolaca, Asaeli Tuivuaka, Iosefo Masi and Jiuta Wainiqolo.
However, Fuli indicated that he has depth in his extended squad.
The Dubai 7s will be from November 26-27.
