The villagers of Narewa in Waicoba, Nadroga, received food relief items from one of their own who is playing professional rugby in France.

Flying Fijian and Clermont backrow, Peceli Yato, said it was time to give back to his village especially when everyone is suffering from the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

“In this time of crisis, I thought about my family and village as well,” he said.

“I had to give back especially what they needed the most. The little we have we should always share it with each other.”

Yato said as a village boy, he always experienced this especially after a cyclone struck.

Village headman, Navitalai Bakewa, said Yato‘s help had really shocked them

“On mid-day Tuesday we were taken by surprise when a big truck came to the village to deliver all these groceries,” he said.

“The villagers are grateful to him for his assistance which will be shared by 80 households. This includes those in the village and the Tavuto settlement as well.”

He said the total worth of the groceries is between $5000 to $6000.

Bakewa added that the village would present their traditional thanksgiving ceremony on a later date once the restrictions are lifted.

“Yato was born and bred in the village and we are so proud of what he has done,” he added.
