Like any other rugby player in the country, Nadroga Under-20 rugby captain Tevita Sorouto is aiming for greener pastures.

He is only way there is to secure an overseas contract or make it to the Fijian Drua academy.

The Nubuenitu, Navosa, native, led by example in their 43-3 triumph over hosts Vatukoula in the Skipper Cup U20 clash at Theodore Park last Saturday.

Sorouto was raised in Tacirua outside Suva and was dropped out of school as he did not complete his Year 10. However, it was his resilience to overcome the difficulties he had faced led him to utilise his sporting talent, which resulted in him playing club rugby games.

“Resilience can take a person far, even when the odds are stacked against them,” Sorouto told SUNsports.

He was brought up by his grandparents and had a very humble beginning.

Sorouto attended Jagindra Primary School and was selected to join the Nasinu Under-14 team in the Milo Kaji rugby competition.

“We won the Milo Kaji rugby title in 2019 after we played against Lautoka in the final,” he recalled.

He then went on to play for Tacirua under the Nasinu Rugby Union club competition.

“I wanted a bigger thing in rugby, so I moved to Sigatoka and joined Seabreeze Rugby Club (in Yavulo).

“This is where I got selected to play for Nadroga Under-20 provincial rugby team,” Sorouto said.

“Deep inside me, I know that rugby has always been the most loved and revered sport in the country.

“So I have set my sail to wear the white jersey as it was my dream. I trust in God’s timing, whether in rugby or studies and to focus on my goal.”

He thanked his family in Tacirua and Yavulo in Nadroga, for supporting his dream.

Sorouto thanked the Vatukoula U20 side for a good match.

“We never underestimate any team, but we played to what we were trained for,” he added.
