The Kasabias Sinukakala Amazons women’s 7s team has booked a semi-final spot after defeating Lilian Amazons 12-7 in the quarterfinals.
In their first match, they beat Seahawks, 21-7, and won by default Tagimoucia Ranadi. Their third match was against Police.
Captain Eseta Vunitabua said the team delivered a strong performance.
“I would like to thank my teammates for the effort and performance they showed. Despite our lack of preparation for this competition, we managed to win all three games,” Vunitabua said.
She said that the team did not expect such positive results, as they had limited time to prepare for the tournament.
She said that the team was largely made up of players from the Nasinu women’s 15s side who decided to form a team specifically to compete in this year’s Fiji Bitter Marist 7s.
“For our 7s team, most of us came from the Nasinu women’s 15s team, and we decided to put together a side to participate in this year’s Fiji Bitter Marist 7s,” she said.
Vunitabua acknowledged that transitioning from 15s rugby to the faster-paced 7s format was challenging for the players.
She also noted that this was the team’s first appearance at the prestigious 50th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament.
“Since this is our first time competing in a major 7s tournament in Fiji, we are aiming to claim the women’s title,” she said.
Vunitabua added that for many of the players, the tournament marked their first experience playing 7s rugby.
