“For now, I’m not confirmed yet. It’s pretty sad to leave the Drua. I didn’t want to leave because my heart is here and my family is here, but it’s a journey. Everyone comes and goes. I’m forever grateful for the journey here to the Drua and I’m looking forward to the next chapter.”
Tabuavou received the Tanoa Hotels Community Champion Award at the 2026 McDonald’s Fiji Drua Presentation Night at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau, Tuesday night.
The award recognises the player who made the greatest contribution to community engagement, fan initiatives and sponsor activities throughout the season.
He was the unanimous choice after leading community visits, school engagements and sponsor appearances across Fiji while continuing to contribute on the field.
His impact extended beyond public appearances, with his support of younger players and willingness to engage with fans making him one of the club’s most valued ambassadors.
The recognition was especially significant as Tabuavou was also acknowledged as one of the club’s departing players as he had completed a two-year contract.
“To be honest, I didn’t really expect it. When they called out the Community Champion award, the boys were shouting my name, but I didn’t expect it. I’m really grateful for the award.”
Tabuavou who started his career with French Top 14 club Racing 92 dedicated the award to his mother.
“My mum always said that without the support at home and without the fans, we wouldn’t be able to be here. We wouldn’t be able to win our home games or perform away from home. I’m very grateful for that support. Unfortunately, my mum isn’t here, but I dedicate this award to her.”
He also thanked loyal fans for standing by the team throughout the season.
“When we went through tough times, the supporters stayed loyal. We always say they are the best fans in the world.”
Reflecting on his time with the Drua, Tabuavou said the highlight was the 25-20 win over the Hurricanes in Lautoka.
“It was a must-win match. It was raining and we were playing one of the top teams in Super Rugby. Winning at home and doing it at the last minute made it a special moment.”
Tabuavou has 10 Test Caps for the Flying Fijians and starred in their Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) wins for the past two years.
