Despite signing up for the Moana Pasifika for the Super Rugby Pacific debut on February 18, Timoci Tavatavanawai is keen on securing a Flying Fijian spot in the 2023 World Cup.
The 23-year-old winger has been a star player for the Tasman Mako in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship and so far the only Fijian with Moana Pasifika.
Tavatavanawai an injury replacement with the Crusaders during their pre-season, scored two tries against Highlanders in February.
He joined Highlanders in May as an injury cover for Connor Garden-Bachop who had suffered a broken wrist. Now, the Naikawaga, Namara, Tailevu native is ready to take on the challenge to play against his fellow countrymen on Saturday, February 20.
“It will be a challenge, especially playing against Fijian players,” Tavatavanawai said.
“But this has been my decision for a secure future regarding rugby. I want to secure a New Zealand permanent residency.”
He indicated that he has signed for a one year contract with Moana Pasifika.
“Will see what and where the course takes me from there, letting God lead the way.
“But for the 2023 World Cup, it will be a dream come true to play for Fiji.”
He represented Fiji Under 20 player while attending Queen Victoria School.
He played along Fijian Drua forward Meli Derenalagi in the same team during the Deans Trophy competition in 2016.
Tavatavanawai moved to New Zealand after completing high school to play for Central Rugby Club in the Marlborough region before playing for Makos.
