For 30-year-old Malcom McKay from Waila, Diwali is more than just bright lights and sweets, it’s a celebration of togetherness.
Although an iTaukei by birth, Mr McKay has celebrated Diwali for the past five years with his neighbours and friends. For him, the festival is a chance to share love, peace, and happiness with everyone, regardless of background.
“This day reminds us that light always wins over darkness,” Mr McKay said.

“I may not be Hindu, but Diwali brings people together. It’s about unity and respect, and that’s something every Fijian should celebrate.”
Mr McKay said growing up in a multicultural community taught him the value of sharing in others’ traditions. Each year, he joins his Indo-Fijian neighbours for prayers, sweets, and the lighting of lamps.
“This is what makes Fiji special. We celebrate each other’s festivals as one people,” he said.
Mr McKay said Diwali is not just about religion but about harmony. “We may come from different backgrounds, but light is for everyone,” he said.
“And Diwali reminds us to keep that light burning, in our homes and in our hearts.”
