The Western Association of People with Disability (WAPD) will host its annual Wheel-a-Thon in Lautoka on Saturday, aiming to empower more than 200 members.

Association president Eloni Tora said the 4-kilometre community walk and wheel event is designed to secure vital resources for its growing membership.

“As the new president, the plan is to raise $10,000 in one day. We have included corporate business houses in Lautoka to support this goal,” he said.

“The association currently serves over 200 individuals with disabilities, and the funds raised from the Wheel-a-Thon will be directed toward upgrading our facilities, wheelchair parts, food, medicine, and other essentials.”

Mr Tora urged residents and businesses to support the initiative. “Join us on December 20 as we walk and wheel 4km, symbolising the journey toward greater inclusion and empowerment for our community,” he said.

Teams will gather at Vunato Ground at 9am and will be divided into four groups, each moving along Narara Parade, Vitogo Parade, Tavewa Avenue, Yasawa Street, and Namoli Avenue.

“We have the permit. In previous years, we were only allowed to conduct the event outside Lautoka, from Vunato to Natabua.

This is the first year we can hold it in the CBD area, and I thank the Lautoka Special Administrator for allowing this for one day,” he said.

Mr Tora, a retired military officer, shared his personal experience.

“I was able-bodied before, but then I lost my limbs. Most people with disabilities were once able-bodied, and homes often needed ramps for bathroom access, which some couldn’t afford. That’s where we step in to assist,” he said.

He also acknowledged trustee Kanti Punja, who has been instrumental in advancing the association’s vision.
