Korean community marks Liberation Day with Suva clean-up

The Korean community in Fiji will mark the 81st anniversary of Korea’s Liberation Day with the inaugural Korea-Fiji Friendship Clean Walk in Suva on Saturday.

Organisers say the event will combine remembrance, community service and environmental stewardship while strengthening ties between Fiji and Korea.

It will begin at 8am on August 15, with participants gathering in front of the Bowling Club beside the Grand Pacific Hotel before taking part in a community walk and clean-up campaign.

The event is being organised by the 22nd Fiji Korean Association, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Fiji and the Fiji Chapter of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, with support from the Overseas Koreans Agency and KOICA.

Held under the theme, “In the Spirit of Liberation, Together for a Cleaner Fiji,” the initiative aims to encourage environmental responsibility while bringing together Koreans and Fijians through friendship and service.

Organisers said the occasion was an opportunity for the Korean community to give back to Fiji, a country many members now call home, by contributing to a cleaner Suva and engaging with local communities.

Korean community members, families, students and Fijian friends have been invited to take part.

Students who participate will be eligible to receive a Certificate of Participation recognising their community service.

The Fiji Korean Association hopes the Clean Walk will become an annual event promoting environmental awareness and strengthening people-to-people connections between the two countries.

The Clean Walk will be held from 8am to about 10.30am on Saturday, with participants meeting at the Bowling Club beside the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
