At just 20, Rabia Fareed Ibrahim is stepping into a field where few women have gone before — determined to become an aircraft engineer.
Growing up in the North, she would stop and watch planes lift into the sky, wondering how they worked.
Today, the former Labasa Sangam (SKM) College student is in her second year at Fiji National University’s Bonunaqwele Nadi Campus, studying for a Certificate in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Mechanical) Level 4.

She is among a growing number of young women entering the programme, challenging long-held norms in a male-dominated industry.
“I have always been curious about machines and how they operate. Seeing airplanes and learning about the technology behind them inspired me to pursue aviation mechanical studies. I was also motivated by the important role aircraft mechanics play in ensuring the safety and reliability of aircraft,” Ms Ibrahim said.
But the path has not always been easy.
“Sometimes I feel that I have to work harder to prove my skills and confidence in technical tasks, however I overcame this by staying focused on my goals, working hard in my studies, and believing in my abilities.”
Despite the challenges, she sees her place in aviation as an opportunity — not just for herself, but for others who may follow.
“Women in aviation makes a difference by bringing new skills, perspectives, and ideas to the industry. Their contributions as engineers, pilots, and technicians help improve innovation, teamwork, and safety in aviation. By succeeding in this field, we can also inspire more young women to pursue careers in aviation,” she added.
Her message to other young women is simple, but firm.
“Do not let other people’s opinions stop you. Trust yourself, believe in your abilities, and never be afraid to follow your dreams.”
For Ms Ibrahim, every lesson, every challenge, and every step forward is bringing her closer to that dream — proving that the sky is no longer the limit.
