“A nation that honours its teachers honours its future.”
That is the message by the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) before the upcoming World Teachers Day celebration on October 5, which falls on Sunday.
FTU general secretary Muniappa Goundar said the true essence of the day lies in the spirit of recognition and gratitude it brings for all teachers.

World Teachers Day is celebrated annually to honour the teaching profession and reflect on the vital role educators play in shaping communities and the nation. The global theme for 2025, chosen by Education International, is “Together for Teachers, Together for Tomorrow.”
Mr Goundar said the theme captures a powerful truth: the future of Fiji’s children and the country depends on how well teachers are supported today.
“Here in Fiji, we have seen positive steps taken for teachers in recent years,” Mr Goundar said.
“The Coalition Government’s initiatives, restoring tenure instead of contracts, granting the highest salary increment since 1970, raising the retirement age to 60, and allowing teacher unions to work more closely with the Ministry of Education are clear acknowledgements of the value teachers bring to national development.”
He said these reforms reflected the spirit of this year’s theme, ensuring teachers feel respected, secure, and empowered to give their best. At the same time, Mr Goundar acknowledged ongoing challenges, including the migration of teachers to Australia and New Zealand, which threatens to leave gaps in classrooms.
“This is why we must continue to stand together for teachers, providing not just fair salaries and conditions but also professional development, recognition, and community support,” he said. “Only then can we build a sustainable education system for tomorrow.”
Mr Goundar commended every teacher across Fiji for their resilience, commitment, and sacrifice. Whether in urban centres or remote rural schools, he said teachers continue to guide, inspire, and uplift students often going beyond the call of duty to ensure no child is left behind.
“When we stand together for teachers, we are not only supporting a profession. We are securing the foundation of tomorrow’s society,” he said.
