Young leaders aim to leave a lasting impact

For Mohammed Faharan Nafeef, wearing the head boy badge is more than just a title — it is a promise.
The newly inducted head boy of Labasa Sangam Primary School yesterday pledged to lead with discipline, pride and purpose following the school’s prefect induction ceremony.
A total of 60 students were inducted as prefects, marking what many described as a milestone moment in their young lives.

Mohammed said earning the role through an interview process made the achievement even more meaningful.
“We were selected as leaders of our school through an interview. Nothing makes me prouder than wearing this badge and honouring it with pride. We are here to prove that,” Mohammed said.
He credited his teachers and parents for standing by him and said belief in himself helped him succeed.
“I had faith that made me believe that yes, I can do it, and here I am as the head boy of the school,” he said.
As a Year 8 student in his final year at the school, Mohammed said he wanted his leadership to leave a lasting impact.
“With this honour, I will take up my responsibilities and deliver my best in this role,” he said.
Head girl Julie Shelin Chand also described her appointment as deeply meaningful, saying she hoped to make her parents proud through her leadership.
“I want to bring positive change to our school. My goal is to improve students’ behaviour and promote a good attitude,” Julie said.
She believes discipline begins with simple habits — planning ahead and sticking to timetables.
“This leadership role is something special for me. It pushes us to become better leaders in the future. Taking responsibility is not difficult if you have true determination,” she said.
School head teacher Bal Sanju Reddy said the prefects would play a key role in strengthening leadership and discipline across the school — a responsibility these young leaders appear ready to embrace.
