31 families receive keys to new homes

For 31 families, today marked the beginning of a new chapter as they received the keys to their first homes under the Housing Authority's affordable housing programme.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka handed over the keys to new two-bedroom homes at the Nepani Model Homes in Nasinu, joined by Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa and Housing Authority board chairperson Marika Luveniyali.

The handover completed the first 101 model homes built under the Housing Authority's affordable housing programme for low and middle-income earners.

Mr Rabuka said the occasion represented more than the handing over of houses.

"Today is more than just a key handover ceremony. It is a celebration of hope, an opportunity and the fulfilment of aspirations," he said.

Of the 31 families, 28 qualified under Category 1, with annual household incomes of $30,000 or less, while three qualified under Category 2, earning between $30,001 and $60,000.

Drawing on his own experience of buying land at Raiwasa and taking out a Housing Authority loan in 1968, Mr Rabuka encouraged the new homeowners to value not only their homes but also their families and communities.

"Look after your children. Look after them well. Look after each other," he said.

Mr Luveniyali said the project reflected the Housing Authority's commitment to helping low and middle-income earners achieve home ownership through Government-supported initiatives.

"This achievement reflects the Housing Authority's commitment to supporting low and medium income earners," he said.

The Housing Authority plans to build about 700 more homes over the next 12 months and develop 5800 residential lots by 2031, including projects at Davuilevu, Veikoba, Tacirua and Tavakubu in Lautoka.
