Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, has urged newly graduated soldiers to remain politically neutral and uphold strong ethical values as they begin their service.
Speaking at the Force Training Group (FTG) passing-out parade in Nasinu today, Major-General Kalouniwai told the new recruits that their mission as soldiers goes far beyond military training and combat readiness. He said their true strength lies in integrity, moral judgment, and a commitment to justice.
“You won’t just be fighting to save lives,” he said. “You’ll be protecting the ideals that define our nation.”

He reminded the recruits that they serve all Fijians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation, and that their actions must always reflect fairness, impartiality, and respect for human rights.
Major-General Kalouniwai acknowledged the complex political environment Fiji faces and stressed that the RFMF must remain a stabilising force committed to serving the government of the day with professionalism, while safeguarding democratic institutions and the rule of law.
He urged the new soldiers to think critically, act with compassion, and always uphold international humanitarian law, saying their actions would be closely watched and have lasting consequences.
“The strength of the RFMF lies not in weapons, but in the character of its members,” he said.
He closed his speech with a quote from Nelson Mandela, encouraging the soldiers never to abandon truth, even in difficult times.
“Honour belongs to those who never forsake the truth,” he quoted.
Major-General Kalouniwai congratulated the soldiers for their discipline and urged them to serve with accountability, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the people of Fiji.
