Fiji, India look to deepen development cooperation

Fiji and India are looking to deepen cooperation in key development sectors as the two countries build on their longstanding historical and people-to-people ties.

India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship during an Independence Day reception at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva on Wednesday.

The event brought together senior Government officials, Cabinet ministers, members of the diplomatic corps and invited guests.

Mr Mehta described Fiji as a valued partner in the Pacific and highlighted India’s interest in expanding cooperation in areas of mutual importance.

The relationship between the two countries extends across education, health, infrastructure, digital transformation, renewable energy, climate resilience and skills development.

India’s support in these areas has contributed to development and community-focused initiatives across Fiji.

Fiji’s Chief of Protocol, Kiti Temo, conveyed Fiji’s congratulations and best wishes to the Government and people of India on the anniversary of the country’s independence.

Ms Temo reflected on the vision, determination and sacrifice that shaped India’s independence and its subsequent development into a major global player in technology, innovation and international affairs.

She also highlighted the strong people-to-people links between Fiji and India, particularly the Girmitiya legacy and its place in Fiji’s national story.

Descendants of Indian indentured labourers have contributed significantly to Fiji’s social, cultural and economic development, creating a lasting connection between the two countries.

Beyond these historical links, Fiji and India have continued to broaden their relationship through development, innovation and community partnerships.

Fiji remains committed to building on the trust and longstanding connections underpinning its relationship with India while exploring further opportunities for cooperation in the Pacific and beyond.

The Independence Day reception also highlighted the shared history between the two countries and their commitment to strengthening the partnership.
