Mother questions school's response after daughter suffers broken arm in school premises

A Year 7 student from a Seaqaqa primary school suffered a broken arm during a school incident, prompting separate investigations by Police and the Ministry of Education.

The 13-year-old student of Korotulotulo Primary School was injured on August 3 while sitting under a tree with other students.

Her mother, Naleshni Devi Nand, of Navidamu, Seaqaqa, claimed another student accidentally pushed her daughter while attempting to retrieve a soccer ball that had been kicked towards them.

Ms Nand said her daughter was not playing soccer at the time.

"She told the class teacher, who tried to tie her hand with a pencil, but the teacher did not call us or take her to the hospital," she said.

Ms Nand said her daughter was later allowed to return home on the school bus.

After arriving home, the student informed her parents about the injury and was taken to hospital, where she was found to have suffered a broken arm.

Ms Nand said the school head teacher was attending a funeral at the time of the incident.

Investigations underway

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident and said investigations were continuing.

Divisional Education Officer Northern Ronald Krishna also confirmed the incident, saying an Education team had visited the school and conducted a preliminary investigation.

He said the student had been sitting under a tree when a soccer ball was kicked towards the area where other students were gathered.

"During the incident, supervision was there. The accident did happen, but we will rely on the investigation report," Mr Krishna said.

He said the preliminary internal report would be submitted to the Ministry of Education headquarters.

The incident is the second reported school-related incident in the Northern Division.
