Fiji will soon launch its first-ever centralised climate data system to strengthen reporting and track progress on national climate goals under the Paris Agreement.

Speaking during an interview at the Grand Pacific Hotel yesterday the senior programme officer at the Global Green Growth Institute, Mihwa Wi, said the Fiji Climate Change and Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency Project is aimed at improving the country’s national systems for climate reporting.

The project, co-executed with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Fiji, will deliver the Fiji Digital Climate Transparency Tool a digital platform designed to house climate data from sectors including energy, transport, agriculture, forestry, waste and industry.

Ms Wi said the system will enable Government to monitor emissions, prepare greenhouse gas inventories, track Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and report on climate finance received.

She said the initiative was developed after identifying major gaps in data management, with climate information currently fragmented across different ministries, making coordination difficult.

A five-day stakeholder training is underway to prepare users ahead of the official launch scheduled for April 28.

The new platform is expected to improve transparency, coordination and efficiency in Fiji’s climate reporting while supporting its global commitments.
