Fiji Sugar Corporation chief executive Vimal Dutt says that the return of democratic elections for the Sugar Cane Growers Council is key to restoring farmer representation and strengthening Fiji’s sugar industry.

Speaking at a meeting for sugar industry institutions and stakeholders at the FSC Training Centre in Lautoka yesterday, Mr Dutt said growers needed a stronger voice in decision-making after years without elected representatives.

“Once growers have elections, their voices will be heard and part of the decision-making process,” he said.

Mr Dutt also called for reforms to the Sugar Industry Tribunal, saying delays in resolving disputes during the current crushing season were frustrating and disrupting operations.

He identified labour shortages as another major challenge, despite government support through harvesting subsidies.

While overseas labour remain an option, Mr Dutt said proper welfare, insurance and employment arrangements would need to be in place before any recruitment could proceed.

Mr Dutt said the long-term focus should be on increasing growers’ income rather than expanding grant programmes, allowing farmers to invest directly in their own operations.
