Banned kawakawa, donu, turtle seized at Suva port

The Ministry of Fisheries has seized banned kawakawa (grouper), donu (coral trout) and turtle carcasses from a boat that arrived in Suva last week.

The banned species are believed to have been brought from Lau for the ongoing Methodist Church in Fiji conference in Suva.

Minister for Fisheries Alitia Bainivalu confirmed the seizure, saying ministry enforcement officers searched the boat and found the prohibited species.

Kawakawa and donu are subject to a seasonal fishing ban, which remains in place until October 1.

Turtle meat is restricted throughout the year, although special provisions can be granted by the ministry for legitimate requests.

Ms Bainivalu said the quantity seized had yet to be determined and would influence what action was taken against those found with the banned species.

“Before, when we confiscated banned fish, we reported it to the Police. But now, because of the lack of capacity within the Police Force in dealing with other matters apart from their normal operations, our enforcement officers are handling it,” she said.

“If it is in small quantity, we issue a warning letter to the person, but if it is in large quantity, then they are fined.”

Under the Offshore Fisheries Management Regulation, a person found in possession of, transporting or receiving the banned species may face a fine of up to $10,000, while a corporate entity may face a fine of up to $20,000.

The ministry has 30 days from the date of the alleged offence to gather evidence and prepare an investigation report.

Those issued with a fine notice have 21 days to pay.

If the fine is not paid within that period, the ministry will take the matter to court.
