A grieving great-grandmother is struggling to come to terms with the loss of her young grandson after a road accident in Nadi claimed his life this week.

Nathan Bogitini, aged one year and six months, died after the vehicle he was travelling in veered off the road and landed in a drain.

His great-grandmother, Lillian Utuutu, 61, said Nathan had become a treasured part of the family after moving into their Namotomoto, Nadi, home in February last year.

Holding back tears as she reflected on the toddler's short life, Ms Utuutu said the family was still trying to process the tragedy.

“He became part of our family, and his passing has come as a shock,” Ms Utuutu said.

“He liked spending time on his own and did things at his own pace. He was a good boy, and I had high hopes for him.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the incident occurred on Tuesday morning.

“The victim was one of two passengers in a vehicle driven by a 38-year-old man along Nadi Back Road when it veered off the road and landed in a drain,” Ms Naisoro said.

“The victim was rushed to Nadi Hospital, where his death was confirmed by medical officials.

“The alleged cause of the accident, based on initial information gathered, was driver fatigue. However, this remains subject to investigation.”

Ms Naisoro said the 39-year-old driver would be questioned as investigations continue.

“Drivers are urged to get adequate rest, as fatigue increases the risk of accidents. Drivers, parents, and guardians are also reminded to ensure children are properly secured and safe while travelling in vehicles,” she said.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted on Monday, after which funeral arrangements will proceed.

The road death toll currently stands at 23, compared with 25 for the same period last year.
