The Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has confirmed the immediate resignation of Karen Lobendahn from her role as director of marketing and communication at the Fiji National University (FNU).

Her resignation was formally tendered on October 14 and accepted by the university, which stated that the decision was personal and has been respected.

The announcement follows a meeting between the Minister and FNU leadership, including Vice Chancellor Unaisi Nabobo, council chairperson Semesa Karavaki, and available council members convened in response to complaints from past and current staff.

Concerns discussed included allegations involving Mrs Lobendahn, unresolved grievances within the School of Law, and delays in addressing staff issues. Mr Radrodro said that FNU must prioritise student welfare and avoid allowing internal matters to escalate publicly.

The meeting resulted in a directive for FNU to strengthen its disciplinary processes to ensure timely and fair resolution of staff-related issues. Remaining grievances, including those involving a senior law lecturer, are expected to be addressed urgently, with a report to be submitted to the Ministry of Education.

Mr Radrodro reminded FNU to uphold the rule of law in all decisions and cited Section 30(3) of the FNU Act 2009, which empowers the Vice Chancellor to appoint, discipline, suspend, or dismiss staff under the council’s direction.

FNU has confirmed that matters involving Mrs Lobendahn were investigated through its internal procedures, with findings leading to appropriate administrative actions. An independent review has also been initiated to address other allegations thoroughly and fairly.

The university reiterated its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and adherence to its Human Resources Policies, guided by the Employment Relations Act. It continues to work closely with the ministry and the FNU Council to resolve outstanding matters and maintain institutional stability.

"The university takes all allegations seriously. Any matter raised through formal or recognised channels is subject to review or investigation as appropriate. Where necessary, FNU also engages independent external expertise, including legal expertise, to ensure impartiality."

In addition, the university encourages staff to use the proper reporting mechanisms, including the Whistleblower and Grievance Procedures, to ensure that all concerns are handled responsibly and in accordance with policy.
