Police said the investigation was confirmed in late March.
According to Police, the senior Government official voluntarily came forward and lodged a report to allow authorities to investigate the claims and establish the truth.
Following the report, an investigation was initiated and is now being handled by senior investigators within the Criminal Investigations Department.
The Fiji Police Force acknowledged the importance of upholding individuals’ rights to freedom of expression and speech but stressed that these rights must be exercised responsibly.
Members of the public have been urged to carefully assess information shared online and avoid spreading content based on rumours rather than facts and evidence.
Police reiterated the need for responsible use of social media platforms.
Police also emphasised that investigations take time and must be allowed to proceed without interference or external influence.
“Social media users are advised to discern information posted, to avoid sharing content that is based on rumours rather than evidence and facts, reiterating the responsible use of social media,” the statement read.
“The investigation process takes time and must be allowed to take its course without interference or influence.
“Everyone deserves a fair opportunity to respond to claims made, and the avenue pursued by this individual to verify claims is the conduct of an investigation by Police, which is currently underway.”
