Fijian seasonal workers in Australia and New Zealand could soon contribute to the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) under legislative changes being pushed by Parliament.
The Standing Committee on Social Affairs has recommended that FNPF expedite necessary legislative amendments to include seasonal workers and voluntary contributors based overseas.
“The committee recommends that FNPF expedite the necessary legislative amendments to strengthen coordination with relevant stakeholders to facilitate and support the inclusion of seasonal workers and voluntary contributors based in Australia and New Zealand,” the report stated.

Committee chairperson Iliesa Vanawalu said this initiative was vital for enhancing financial inclusion and long-term savings for Fijians employed abroad.
During a public submission in September, FNPF officials revealed they are in discussions with stakeholders in both countries to explore ways to facilitate the transfer of superannuation funds.
Acting Senior Manager Member Services Farnaz Queet told the committee the partnerships were designed to ensure seasonal workers could establish savings while abroad.
“We are creating a platform to facilitate consistent contributions back to the Fund,” Ms Queet said.
Currently, seasonal workers are not mandatory FNPF members if not employed in Fiji, though they can join the voluntary scheme.
The committee noted discussions are complex and require coordination between both governments, foreign affairs departments, and superannuation authorities.
