Teen’s death sparks safety fears in Wailoku

A Wailoku resident is appealing for increased police patrols and the demolition of an abandoned house in Tamavua, claiming the property has become a hotspot for anti-social behaviour.

The appeal follows the death of teenager Lote Kima last Friday. The incident has left the community in shock, with residents raising concerns about children’s safety and calling for greater vigilance.

Va Cokanakadavu, 54, said the tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for parents to closely monitor their children.

“As a mother, I could never imagine something this terrible happening to my children,” she said.

“Parents need to know where their children are at all times. We cannot take their safety for granted anymore.”

Ms Cokanakadavu claimed the abandoned house had become a gathering place for people involved in unwanted activities and urged authorities to demolish it.

“That empty house has become a breeding ground for unusual activities, such as the consumption of alcohol and making noise which actually disturbs the neighbourhood,” she said.

“Authorities need to take it down because it is creating an unsafe environment for everyone, especially our children.”

She said residents had occasionally witnessed late-night drinking sessions in the area and wanted more police presence.

“We need more police patrols and regular checks, especially at night,” she said.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a 17-year-old suspect was questioned and released.
