SODELPA Manifesto questions

Compensation

The SODELPA Manifesto will introduce compensation for “historically unjust dispossession of native titles, correct such historical error and colonial government dealings with native land by budgeting for compensatory provision.

QUESTION: Why was this not done immediately after Sitiveni Rabuka deposed the democratically-elected government of Dr Timoci Bavadra in the 1987 military coups and later when he became Prime Minister in the SVT Government? Mr Rabuka had stopped Fijian Nationalist Party leader in his tracks when the late Sakeasi Butadroka, then Minister for Lands in Mr Rabuka’s military government, started to carry out a similar exercise. The provision appeals to iTaukei landowners Commission.

Truth and Reconciliation

Manifesto calls for the establishment of a “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” to heal the division and scars left by events of 2000 and 2006. It is intended for genuine reconciliation, forgiveness and mercy.

QUESTION: Why was 1987 omitted? Was it because Mr Rabuka was involved in that year’s military coups?

Human rights, freedom

The manifesto calls for removal of laws that restrict human rights and freedom of expression of individuals.

QUESTION: What are these restrictions? Freedom of expression is alive through letters to the editor, online comments, political columns and news pages in the newspapers.

Employment Contracts

Contractual arrangements will be removed immediately for all public sector employees.

QUESTION: Does this mean that a merit-based system goes to the back burner? Contracts are based on qualification and performance not on the years of service.

Two types of maths

The Ministry of Education is looking at introducing two streams of maths.

One is for pure maths like algorithm and the other one is for everyday life maths.

Kadavu not for sale

Those who are spreading lies that Kadavu is being bought by the Chinese are just being mischievous.

The question popped up again at a talanoa session at Rewa. District School.

Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was on hand to set the record straight.
