What emergency?
Seen on the Queens Highway in Nadi, a vehicle with flashing lights like Police, ambulance or National Fire Authority vehicles. On closer inspection it turned out to be a vehicle with the proud marking “Judicial” on the door.
The LTA now has most of its vehicles with flashing lights fitted and around Denarau there are a number of G-plated Ministry vehicle with lights usually placed on the dashboard.

If too many more departments, with no real need to break the speed limit for life or death emergencies or enforcement, are fitted with the flashing lights, the lights will become meaningless. They will be ignored hindering the work of those dealing with real issues.
At least flashing light non-emergency vehicles are not fitted with sirens as well (or maybe they are). The authorities concerned need to take a relook at the use of flashing lights and maybe limit their spread is a strong view BTL heard.

While we’re on the subject of lights: What is being done about those drivers who speed on through traffic lights after they’ve already turned red? Impunity seems to rule, says a friend of BTL. He’s had a few close encounters on the busy Ratu Mara Road-Rewa Street intersection in Suva.
Now where are all those new Police motorcyclists?
