In a society that thrives on the free flow of information, journalists play a vital role as the conduits of truth, sharing stories that shape our understanding of the world.
Yet, in the pursuit of their duty to keep the public informed, journalists, reporters, and photographers often find themselves in the line of fire - not from the challenges of their profession, but from the very communities they serve.
It is disheartening to witness the rise in incidents where media professionals face verbal and physical abuse, and even threats from the families of those accused of crimes.

We commend the Fiji Police Force for establishing a task force to investigate reports of harassment against journalists.
The Acting Commissioner of Police has unequivocally stated that such incidents should not be happening.
Yet, the pertinent question remains: Why are they still happening?
Journalists are well within their rights to perform their jobs, and the freedom of the media must be respected.
They are performing a public service that demands acknowledgment, appreciation, and understanding of the hard work they put in.
It is time for an unequivocal call to end the harassment and threats against journalists.
The freedom of the press is a cornerstone of any democratic society, and journalists deserve to exercise their duties without fear of intimidation.
Let us collectively uphold the principles of a free and responsible media, ensuring that those who dedicate themselves to the public service of truth are protected and respected.
Journalists, like any citizens, have the right to perform their duties without intimidation.
These incidents highlight the importance of respecting media freedom, upholding the law, and fostering an environment where journalists can engage with public officials without fear of reprisal.
Authorities must address this promptly to ensure the rights of journalists are upheld in a democratic society.
