In the heart of Fiji, where rugby isn't just a sport but a way of life, a noticeable shift has occurred. Once fervently celebrated, the Fijian 7s team finds itself grappling for attention amidst the rising prominence of the Fijian Drua in Super Rugby.

This transition has left many Fijian rugby fans pondering: why the diversion from the electrifying allure of 7s to the burgeoning spectacle of the Drua?

Since the emergence of rugby legends such as Waisale Serevi onto the 7s stage, Fijian rugby fans found solace and jubilation in the exhilarating world of sevens rugby.

With its rapid pace and breathtaking displays of skill, 7s rugby captured the hearts of Fijians, overshadowing the struggles of the Flying Fijians in the 15s arena.

The crescendo of this fervour peaked at the Hong Kong 7s in So Kon Po, etching names such as Serevi and the Fijian 7s team onto the global rugby pantheon.

Yet, as the Drua made its grand entrance into Super Rugby, the landscape of Fijian rugby underwent a seismic shift.

The allure of 7s began to wane as the Drua, with its dynamic gameplay and fresh appeal, seized the spotlight.

The Drua's success wasn't merely on the field; it was amplified by astute marketing, approachable officials and players, and enticing merchandise, setting it apart from the traditional confines of Fijian rugby.

The corporate world, quick to capitalise on the Drua's ascent, forged partnerships that yielded substantial rewards, leaving the Fijian 7s and Flying Fijians trailing in the wake of missed opportunities.

For the Fiji Rugby Union and the Fijian 7s team, the path to reclaiming their former glory demands introspection and action.

To rekindle the fervour of 7s rugby, they must enhance accessibility, revitalise marketing strategies, and foster stronger connections with fans and sponsors alike.

Consistency in performance is paramount, with victories serving as the catalyst to reignite national pride and rejuvenate support.

As the Hong Kong 7s looms on the horizon, hope flickers once more. A triumph for the Fijian 7s team could mark a resurgence, reminiscent of the glory days of yore.

The onus lies on the team to defy odds, break free from the shackles of inconsistency, and usher in a new era of dominance.

In this juncture, where the soul of Fijian rugby stands at a crossroads, one truth remains immutable: the spirit of Fijian rugby, forged in resilience and adorned with brilliance, will endure.

It's time to reclaim our place on the global stage in 7s rugby, not just as contenders but as champions once more.
