Editorial: 7s Review, Time To Decide On Coach’s Fate

What’s the point of having another review when we’ve not won the last 17 tournaments in the series?

In 2009, the axe fell on then Fiji men’s rugby sevens head coach, Waisale Serevi.

He was only four months into the job.

The legendary playmaker did not agree with the selection policy adopted by Rugby House and was told to hand in his resignation.

There were no considerations given despite the fact that Serevi, as a player, had captained Fiji to win the 1997 and 2005 Rugby World Cups.

Later as coach, he led Fiji to win the 2005/06 HSBC World Sevens Series title for the first time.

There were no but’s or if ’s as the maestro was simply shown the door.

If that was how Serevi, our rugby sevens legend was treated, then why can’t the decision makers at Rugby House decide on Ben Gollings fate.

Why the hold-up?

What’s the point of having another review when we’ve not won the last 17 tournaments in the series?

The results and the team’s performance speak for itself so there’s nothing else to discuss on the matter.

We cannot be on a winless run and expect to retain the gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games, which is from July 26 to August 11.

Time is not on our side since the Olympics is six months away.

We cannot go on believing that everything is going to get better when the results are not coming our way.

There is no other way but for FRU interim Trustees led by chairman, Peter Mazey, to make the necessary changes that will boost our winning chances in the next Series tournaments and the Olympic Games, as well.
