Editorial: A big relief

“Together, we must unite in calling for all parties involved in the conflict to seek a peaceful resolution. De-escalation of the ongoing violence is necessary and we call for the protection of civilians as this conflict threatens the security of the region as a whole.”

As the situation between Israel and the militant group Hamas remains uncertain, Fijians and those who travelled to Israel can take some comfort in knowing that they are well and truly safe.

As international media reported, hours after the Fiji Airways took off at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport, the militant group launched rockets towards the airport.

Yesterday, a clear sigh of relief and gratitude was displayed at the Nadi International Airport.

The pilgrims to the Feast of Tabernacle, the students studying and interning at one of Israel’s and the crew of the Fiji Airways chartered flight were accorded a traditional welcome ceremony by Government.

The scene would have been different, as we learn, again from international media, that airlines cancelled their flights to Tel Aviv while thousands crowded the airport hoping to return or flee from Israel.

Mereani Mici, a Navuso Agriculture Technical Institute student, spoke of how they could hear gunshots in the distance and soldiers marching knowing their guns were fully loaded.

“It is an experience I have not encountered before,” said the 23-year-old.

Fiji Airways Captain Richard Yuen uttered: “I have flown a couple of flights to the Middle East, but it was the first time for me to land a plane in Israel, a warzone! The amazing thing is that we went by faith. The glory goes to God.”

During the welcoming ceremony, Mr Rabuka declared the country’s unwavering solidarity with Israel, denouncing Hamas’ terrorist attacks.

“With your safe return, I want to make clear our condemnation of the terrorist attack by Hamas which targeted innocent non-combatants and resulted in the continuing loss of life,” he said.

“We also stand with Israel. Israel has the right to defend itself and its people.

“Together, we must unite in calling for all parties involved in the conflict to seek a peaceful resolution. De-escalation of the ongoing violence is necessary and we call for the protection of civilians as this conflict threatens the security of the region as a whole.”

The safe return of our family and loved ones home is truly a remarkable relief, one that we should all be grateful for and not take for granted, for life, as we know it, is precious.
