Editorial: Back to the drawing board

Some quarters were of the mind that Mr Rabuka was “back to his old style”, where he tested those around him by giving them free reign, to prove for themselves and how far each would go to make or mess their chances.

It’s back to the drawing board for the Government, as it returns to the original plan of consultations.

The sudden and recent about-turn offers a ray of light on the direction for an otherwise confused country which was left to guess Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s next move.

In the melee, some Cabinet members returned unaware to the rude realisation of a reshuffle; the general sentiment denoted concern over the growing confusion.

In the undertow, mounting frustration had set the tone in only a matter of months – where decisions were made without consultation, some of which were executed in what many deemed as a one-man army show led by Mr Rabuka.

Some quarters were of the mind that Mr Rabuka was “back to his old style”, where he tested those around him by giving them free reign, to prove for themselves and how far each would go to make or mess their chances.

On many levels, Mr Rabuka has become an enigma, holding his cards close to his chest. Those from the old days would recognise and remember this one trait of his.

He leaves many bewildered about his next move, which have garnered public reaction that suggest a confused lot of leaders with no definite direction.

He stirs ill-feelings among his own for lack of discussion about the next move. It spells danger when his own people are left in a

state of dilemma, particularly from a leader who called for unity, and who has cried for forgiveness publicly many a times.

Those who read between the lines will quietly carry on to tick the priorities boxes before their time is up.

When Mr Rabuka descends from his fourth-floor office today to announce the outcome of his Cabinet’s meeting, the country hopes he clears the air on a host of decisions of late.
