Yet another supermarket has been caught out for tax fraud.

When Fiji Revenue and Customs Service introduced its whistleblower policy, it was done to encourage people to report such companies and this has worked.

So far, $28 million has been recovered by FRCS from companies which attempted to evade and avoid tax. $860,000 has been paid out to people who blew the whistle on these companies’ underhand dealings.

In the most recent case, the supermarket, over the years:

n inflated trade creditors amounts;

  • did not account for certain receipts other than di- rect supermarket sales;
  • purchased properties in family names using company funds;
  • overclaimed zero-rated sales;
  • undeclared incomes from other parts of business such as milk bar; and
  • engaged in general non-compliant behaviour

Such companies are not only attempting to defraud Government, but every Fijian who relies on Government to upgrade infrastructure, provide services needed.

If you have evidence of a business or taxpayer committing Tax or Customs fraud, you are encouraged to report through 9907740 or 9980489 or email directly to ceo@frcs.org.fj

A lot of times it is bigger companies which try to find loopholes in the system to avoid paying tax.

They are depriving every Fijian of money which is put towards making our health sector better, improv- ing our roads, increasing the social wages of people such as free education, $1000 per child born in a household where income in less than $30,000.

This money does not only go towards the running of Government or salaries of civil servants, this money is what Governments use to improve the lives of all citizens.

It is your responsibility to raise the alarm and stop the fraud.
