Stephen Chandra and Tomasi Boginiso yesterday received rewards for their top contributions to the Fiji Sun Letters to the Editor section for the month of December 2017.

The two contributors, writing about national issues such as littering and the shortage of trades people, each walked away with a Philips 1.5L Kettle. They are Fiji Sun's 'Letter of the week' winners for the month of December, 2017

Mr Boginiso, who wrote about a littering problem, he had observed in the Suva-Nausori corridor, said he was happy to receive the reward.

Mr Chandra, an engineer by profession, wrote about the need to reduce the wage gap between retail and trade workers.

Receiving the reward, Mr Boginiso said: “I write because I want to make an impact. But I make it a point to not write about politics and instead focus on issues affecting ordinary people.”

Mr Chandra said: “I’ve always wanted to be a writer even though I took up engineering."

The two winners said they would continue submitting letters to the Fiji Sun.

Both winning letters were judged by a team of senior sub-editors at the newspaper. The selection team would look for new writers who add to the national debate on pressing issues through their letters each month.

The reward system began as an incentive to attract more writers with the ultimate goal of lifting the standard of English and discussion in Fiji.
