Child labour is a wicked and disgraceful act. It is a violation of fundamental human rights. Exploiting children for economic gain through child labour, is detrimental to children’s physical, emotional, and educational development. It is good that Government has recognised this grave issue by taking a zero-tolerance stance against child labour.

So, parents must be warned because the Minister for Women and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has said “Enough is enough.” She is cracking the whip against parents and individuals involved in sending children to sell goods on the streets late at night. Such practices, she said, are illegal. It must stop now!!

Children as young as 10 or 12 are seen late into the night selling foods. This is a disturbing reality that endangers their health, safety, and future prospects. Recent viral images of an exhausted young child sleeping beside his food container in Lami, are a reminder of the urgent need to end this abuse. Every child has the right to education, play, and a safe environment. These are denied through child labour.

Government is enacting strict laws and increasing enforcement to stop child labour. Legal measures alone are not enough, all Fijians are needed to stop child labour. We must not turn a blind eye to the exploitation of our children. Report them to prevent our loved ones from being exposed to crime, drugs, and human trafficking.

To prevent child labour, Government improve family income through fair wages and social support. Less money pushes children into labour. Parents must also prioritise their children’s well-being over short-term gains. They should recognise that our children are Fiji’s future.

It is time for everyone, Government, communities, and families to unite and say: enough is enough. Child labour must stop now, for the safety, dignity, and future of Fiji’s children.
