Residents in low-lying areas warned to prepare to move if conditions worsen

Flash flooding could affect low-lying communities, roads and businesses as a heavy rain alert remains in force for parts of Fiji.

The Fiji Meteorological Service said the alert remained in force for Viti Levu, Yasawa, Mamanuca, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to remain alert and be prepared to move to safer locations if conditions worsen.

An easterly wind flow continues to prevail over Fiji, while a trough of low pressure approaching from the west is affecting western parts of the country.

Occasional rain, isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms are expected.

Authorities have warned that heavy rain could cause flash flooding in flood-prone low-lying communities, informal settlements and business areas.

Irish crossings could also flood and disrupt traffic, while poor drainage could lead to surface flooding on urban streets.

Motorists have been urged to slow down, allow extra travelling time and avoid flooded roads and crossings.

Wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy downpours could also increase the risk of accidents.

People have been advised not to attempt to cross flooded crossings when unsure of the water depth or strength of the current.

Residents should continue monitoring official weather information and follow advice from authorities.
