Heavy rain alert remains as flood risk grows across Fiji

A heavy rain alert remains in force for parts of Fiji, with authorities warning of possible flash flooding and hazardous road conditions.

Viti Levu, Yasawa, Mamanuca, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands are expected to continue experiencing heavy rain.

An easterly wind flow is prevailing over Fiji, while a trough of low pressure approaching from the west is affecting parts of the country.

The conditions could cause flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone communities, informal settlements and business areas.

Irish crossings could also become flooded, disrupting travel, while surface flooding is possible on roads and streets, particularly in urban areas with poor drainage.

Motorists have been warned to exercise caution because heavy downpours could reduce visibility and make roads wet and slippery, increasing the risk of accidents.

People living in flood-prone areas have been urged to remain alert and be prepared to move to safer locations if conditions worsen.

Members of the public should not attempt to cross flooded roads, rivers or Irish crossings.

People are advised to continue monitoring official weather updates and advice from the Fiji Meteorological Service and relevant authorities.
