Police message: Heavy rain is forecast today and may cause flooding. Please keep children safely indoors and avoid crossing flooded rivers and creeks.

Flooding remains the main threat across parts of Fiji as Severe Tropical Cyclone Vaianu moves away from the country.

At 5am, the cyclone was located about 370 kilometres southwest of Kadavu and was moving southeast at around 20km per hour. It is expected to exit Fiji waters later today.

However, authorities warn that the system continues to affect the group, with rain bands and strong north to northwesterly winds still impacting several areas.

Heavy rain, flash flood and strong wind warnings remain in force, along with a special marine bulletin.

Officials say attention has now shifted to rising rivers and potential flooding, as rainfall from upstream catchment areas flows into major waterways.

According to a Governemnt statement, hydrologists are monitoring river levels and issuing alerts where necessary.

Water levels in Nadi Town were reported to be gradually dropping.

Authorities are urging the public to remain alert and exercise caution, particularly around flooded areas.

Parents and guardians are also advised to closely monitor children and prevent them from entering flooded creeks and rivers.

"Please stay safe and let's be careful of our Children who may use this free day to go into vulnerable areas such as flooded creeks or rivers," the statement read.

A police statement also cautioned parents to be on their guard.

"Please continue to keep your children safely indoors. Avoid crossing flooded rivers and creeks. Keep a look out for any broken power lines.

"Call 1681 should you need any help."
