A heavy rain warning and flash flood warning are now in force across the country after Tropical Disturbance TD03F was upgraded to a tropical depression.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says the system is moving towards Fiji and is expected to bring persistent heavy rain, flash flooding and strong northerly winds from tomorrow through Wednesday.

Motorists, mariners and residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas are urged to take precautions and monitor official updates.

In a media release, the Fiji Meteorological Service said Tropical Depression TD03F remains slow moving over open waters to the northeast of Vanuatu and continues to have a low potential of developing into a tropical cyclone.

However, the associated trough of low pressure is already affecting Fiji, with rainbands bringing overcast conditions and occasional to heavy rain.

System to enter Fiji waters

TD03F is forecast to track southeastward between Fiji and Vanuatu and is expected to enter Fiji waters tomorrow.

The system is anticipated to move eastwards through the group and exit via the Lau Group by later Wednesday.

The weather office said rainfall is expected to persist across the country and intensify from Tuesday as the system approaches from the west, continuing through Wednesday.

This increases the risk of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, including downstream of major rivers, small streams and possibly major river systems across the country.

Possible impacts

The Fiji Meteorological Service has warned of the following possible impacts:

  • Poor visibility for motorists due to heavy rain
  • Isolated to significant damage to houses built of old or light corrugated iron or timber, particularly in exposed areas
  • Flash flooding to major flooding in low-lying communities, businesses and Irish crossings, causing traffic disruptions
  • Flooding of major roads, potentially disrupting essential services and power supply

Public warning

The Fiji Meteorological Service said it would continue to monitor the system and issue updates as necessary.

The public is strongly advised to remain alert, monitor official weather updates and take necessary precautions during this period of unsettled weather.

An improvement in weather conditions is expected from Thursday.
