Fijians can expect one to two tropical cyclones to pass through the country’s waters during the 2025-26 cyclone season, with one likely to reach severe Category 3-5 intensity.

The Fiji Meteorological Services has issued its seasonal outlook, warning that while peak activity is typically between January and February, cyclones can form at any time during the season.

Out of season tropical cyclones cannot be ruled out.

The forecast, based on analogue seasons dating back to 1980, indicates near-normal tropical cyclone activity for Fiji this year.

There is equal risk of cyclones affecting any part of the Fiji Group.

Fiji’s cyclone season runs from November to April.

The weather office stressed that communities should not underestimate weaker systems.

“It does not take a direct hit or a severe TC to cause considerable damage or life-threatening weather,” the outlook stated.

Tropical disturbances or depressions that do not reach cyclone intensity have previously caused strong winds, widespread heavy rainfall, landslides and flooding.

“All communities should remain alert and prepared throughout the tropical cyclone season and take heed of all advisories whenever it is issued,” the forecast warned.

On average, around two tropical cyclones affect Fiji every season.
