A 34-year-old record was broken yesterday by Taresa Lola Areki in the intermediate girls discus throw.

The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School student threw a distance of 11.67 metres to beat the old record set in 1992 by Kelera V of Nasinu Secondary School in the Suva Zone One competition.

“I thank the Lord for bringing me this far and It hasn’t always been easy,” she said.

Areki said her goal yesterday morning was to do her best and not to worry about anyone else.

“When I came, I saw it and I knew I could do it. I never pondered over it.

“I just wanted to focus on what was taught and I was focused on executing the skill I’ve learned,” she said.

Areki is not new to the discus throw competition.

“I won bronze when I competed during the sub-junior girls. I went to participate at the junior girls and won gold in the zones and then I won bronze in the Fiji Finals,” she said.

She hails from Tubou, Lakeba, Lau
