The island of Gau in the Lomaiviti group is renowned for producing some of the country’s best players that have shook the rugby world.

The likes of 7s maestro Waisale Serevi, former Crusaders winger Marika Vunibaka, Rauluni brothers- Taito, Peni, Meli, Viliame and Vesito, their nephews Jacob and Mosese, Saimoni Rokini, Samu Saumaisue, prop Naca Seru and the list goes on.

This Friday, the Gau Kacau Knights are again playing at the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s.

The very tournament where all these 7s greats were first identified, drafted into the national 7s team and have never looked back.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Knights manager Mosese Lewanavanua said the team had a mixture of island and Suva- based players.

“Most players were selected from the islands and have competed in the recent Lomaiviti 7s tournament while the remaining players are from the capital,” Lewanavanua said.

“Most of the players in the side have been actively competing in the previous 7s tournaments and through their participation I could see their level of skills have developed.

“The Gau team have been participating over the years in the Marist 7s tournament and produced 7s legends with the likes of Waisale Serevi, Marika Vunibaka and many others.

“We are currently in a reform period of reviving the Gau 7s team and also develop more players in the side and through our participation in this biggest 7s tournament in the country, we can achieve that.”
