The success story of Fiji Airways men’s rugby sevens winger Ropate Rere has been an inspiration tool for the Bua Under-20 rugby team.

The video footage of Rere scoring the winning try in the Cup quarterfinal against the Blitzboks during the Perth Sevens has motivated the young players to play to their best in the Vodafone Vanua Championship.

Bua U20 manager, Samuela Lewavetau, said Rere played for them in the Vodafone Vanua a few years back and his hard work has paid off.

“I believe Rere’s achievement at the highest level of sevens rugby is an inspiration for our aspiring players,” he said.

Lewavetau said they have capable players in the current Bua U20 side to follow in Rere’s footsteps.

Bua has produced top national rugby sevens players like Timoci Wainiqolo, William Ryder, Ilai Tinai and Rio Olympic Games gold medallist Savenaca Rawaca.

“We have players who can match or play better than Rere, so we are working on developing them,” he said.

Rere is from Nagadoa Village in Dama, Bua. He is the first cousin of France-based rugby winger Rawaca.

“I’m happy that one of our own is playing internationally and showcasing his talent to the world.”
