The Kaunikuila basketball club aims to contribute to the development of the sport in the country through the proper execution of the game.

Club president Ben Naisau said their goal is for every team to enjoy the game with mutual support and improve in every match.

“We’re excited for the tournament, and all teams are ready to play hard and have fun,” Naisau said.

“We just want to go out there, give our all and make the most of the experience.”

Naisau said they intend to showcase discipline and teamwork during the three-day tournament.

“We want to bring a sense of class with respect both on and off the court,” he said.

“It’s more than just basketball.”

He said national representatives will be present at the tournament.

“We’re expecting around eight men’s and eight women’s national reps to be involved, which is really encouraging in terms of the level of competition and exposure for our local players,” he said.

“It’s also very positive to see such strong youth engagement leading into this tournament.”

Naisau added that the tournament serves as a great training ground and platform for young athletes to develop their skills and build confidence.

“It helps them stay focused on something constructive. Especially in light of the current challenges around drug use in Fiji, basketball provides a healthy and disciplined environment that can help guide youths toward better choices,” he said.

“Basketball teaches a range of important values, teamwork, discipline, respect, accountability, and resilience.”

Naisau said it was a great sign to see the growing interest from youths and particularly from female athletes.

“It is a very strong sign for the future of basketball here,” he said.

“Their involvement will certainly contribute to the development and growth of the sport.”

The McDonald’s Kaunikuila Basketball Cup will be held on March 26–28 at Vodafone Arena in Suva.
