The Adi Cakobau School (ACS) Under-19 cricket team has secured the top spot in Pool 1 of the Southern Zone Fiji Secondary Schools competition at Albert Park in Suva, last Saturday.

ACS defeated Lelean Memorial School (LMS) by nine wickets and will now face Tailevu North College in the semi-final on Saturday.

ACS U19 team manageress Elina Qereqeretabua said their player’s preparation honed their skills as they put on an outstanding performance.

“Most of them played in the last four years so they have improved in the way they have played,” she said.

“I think the schools need to recognise cricket because it’s a good game for the girls to play apart from netball, basketball and athletics.”

Qereqeretabua added that all secondary schools in the country should recognise cricket as a curriculum as it is an international sport.

“A few girls I’ve known have benefitted from this just by committing themselves to it.

“The parents are fully behind the team because most of my girls are boarders. It’s easy to get the girls to the games venue and take them back home.”

Qereqeretabua has observed that a few school teams attend the games without any supervision by teachers.

“They (students) come with no teachers at all, the students organise and supervise them-selves,” she said.

Most of our players from ACS attended rural schools in the maritime islands like Lau.

“They have been playing cricket from primary school level. It’s not new to them.”
