In its 32nd year, the Tui Suva Volleyball Games is still impacting youths.

This was revealed by one of the organisers, Jone Rokovesa during an interview with SUNsports yesterday.

The tournament which is always held on January 1, boasted 12 men’s teams, eight women’s teams, seven junior teams, and seven sub-junior teams.

Rokovesa commended the large turnout for the one-day competition.

“We are really happy with the turnout each year,” Rokovesa said.

“Many participating teams are from communities and areas close to Suvavou, which is pleasing.”

Rokovesa added the tournament’s aim is to help educate young people away from drugs and peer pressure.

“This area is always known for many bad things.

“It is a good sight to see these games take a positive impact on players not only during the games but in their daily lives as well,” he said.

Rokovesa added the biggest challenge is to try and change the mentality of young people.

“The young are our future leaders; we must try and guide them towards healthy well-being.

“This is one way; and it is through sports,” he said.

Rokovesa stated the Tui Suva Volleyball Games is here to stay to help address these issues.

“Everything begins at home and in communities.

“If we look after our own then other communities will look to be on the same page and achieve the same,” he said.

He added the competition is sponsored by Nadonumai Holdings Limited.

“They have really boosted our tournament; helping in everyway they can,” Rokovesa added.

Also helped in the tournament were Suva Volleyball umpires.

“The Suva Volleyball has always been helping us with the games these past few years.

“We encourage fairness and just decisions and they provide just that,” he said.

The tournament also had neighboring villages join in the festivities.
