Sports day to benefit young athletes with special needs

The Central Eastern Council of Special and Inclusive Educators (CECSIE) believes their annual two-day sports meet is going to benefit them in many ways.

Firstly, to help identify future Paralympians while at the same time give young athletes with special needs an opportunity to showcase their talents.

The competition got underway on Thursday at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva and concluded yesterday.

Organising committee representative and Hilton Special School teacher Joseva Verevou said the event continued to highlight the value of sport in developing young athletes with additional needs.

“As teachers, we see some children struggle in the classroom, but on the sporting field we see a completely different side of them,” Verevou said.

“Sport builds confidence and allows teachers and coaches to identify their strengths. Some of these children have the potential to represent Fiji at the Paralympic Games and other national competitions.”

Students from special and mainstream schools in Suva, Nausori and Levuka took part, promoting inclusion through sport.

“The interaction between participants from special schools and able-bodied students creates understanding, friendship and learning. That’s one of the biggest achievements of these games,” he said.

Verevou said organisers hope to expand the event next year by including more schools and special education organisations from around the country.

He said Paralympic gold medallist Iliesa Delana remained an inspiration for the young athletes.

“If Iliesa Delana could achieve success, these young children can too.

“We must continue supporting them and giving them opportunities to succeed.”

Verevou also thanked major sponsors Extra and McDonald’s for their continued support towards the event.
