Fiji hurdler Meli Romuakalou (junior) said his preparation for next year’s Commonwealth Games trials is on track.

The former Suva Grammar School student improved after he returned from injury and made it to the Pacific Mini Games in Palau in June.

He is the only 400m hurdler who used to run in the 200m and 400m; he now shifts his focus to hurdles.

Romuakalou returned to competition this year with only eight weeks of preparation.

“I’m much fitter, healthier and stronger than before,” Romuakalou said.

“We’ll see whether I qualify or not.

He said coming back from injury was difficult. The pressure increased because younger athletes watched his return.

“It’s not easy mentally,” he said.

Romuakalou said he is often reminded of his injury whenever he sprinted, however, he understood it would be a work in progress as he adjusts to full training again.

He was part of the Athletics Fiji meet yesterday where Fiji athletic great Usaia Sotutu was honoured.

“I finally managed to meet some of the great athletes who inspired me,” he said.

Romuakalou trained under coach Albert Miller, a level five trainer and national coach.

“I’m always thankful to the other coaches who help me out with my sessions,” he said.

His preparation is focused on rebuilding confidence, improving fitness, and staying consistent as he aims for a place at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
